Dataportals and harvesting
The whole purpose of open data is that it should be easy to find, share and use by others. This page describes the process of making your data harvestable in EntryScape and used by dataportals.
To publish your metadata (e.g. open data), follow these steps:
- Publish your data in EntryScape.
- Copy the link (URI) to your published data, i.e., your harvesting source.
- Register the link on a dataportal of your choice.
Note! If you have multiple catalogs in a hierarchy with subcatalogs etc., please contact our support at support@entryscape.com and we will help you.
Publish your data¶
Start by publishing the catalog you want to be harvested. Sign in to EntryScape Catalog to make sure your catalog is public.
Also, ensure that the datasets in the catalog you want to be harvestable are published and accessible for harvesting.
This process may look slightly different depending on how your version of EntryScape is configured. In some cases, there is a single publish button. In other cases, there is a separate "External" button that must be set to "Active" for the data to be harvestable.
The next step is to copy the link (URI) to your published data and provide it to the data portal.
To copy the link to your published catalog in EntryScape Catalog, go to your catalog, click on the Download button.
This will open a window with a link to your published catalog. Copy the link. For example, you can select it with the mouse pointer, right-click, and select "Copy," or press Ctrl + C.
Register your harvesting source on a dataportal¶
Depending on which dataportal you want to register your catalog harvesting souce at, the appearance will differ, but the main principle is the same: Provide a link to your metadata catalog on the dataportal.
Here we use EntryScape Registry as a dataportal example. You can register your harvesting source, with name of organization, contact details and link.
If the link is missing or incorrect, click on Edit and paste the link you just copied from EntryScape Catalog.
When your harvesting source has been saved, your catalog is ready to be harvested by the portal.
Note! Remember that the data portal only has a reference link to your metadata catalog. The files themselves are not stored at the dataportal. It remains with the organization, to which the link on the dataportal refer.
